A Little Kindness Through the Mail πŸ’Œ

Winter Wishes and the Lost Art of Postcards

There was a time when receiving a postcard in the mail was a little event.

You opened the mailbox and found something colorful, personal and unexpected. Someone had taken a moment to choose a card, write a message, add a stamp and send a little piece of themselves your way.

Today, so much of our communication happens instantly. A text takes seconds. An email can reach someone across the world before we’ve even had time to put the kettle on. And while these connections are valuable, something special has been lost along the way.

The handwritten postcard.

A postcard doesn’t need many words to mean something. Thinking of you. Wish you were here. Hope you’re doing okay. Sometimes, those few words can arrive at exactly the right moment.

That is part of the inspiration behind Winter Wishes, a new NNPCN youth art fundraiser launching soon!

We invited young artists to create original winter-inspired artwork that could be transformed into beautiful prints and postcard sets. The goal is simple: to bring back the joy of sending something meaningful through the mail while turning creativity into connection and support.

Winter can be a particularly difficult season for people who are grieving, caring for someone they love, experiencing loneliness or simply moving through a challenging time. A small gesture can remind someone that they haven’t been forgotten.

A postcard can say, I’m thinking of you.

A winter wish can say, You are not alone.

And a young person’s artwork can help make that message possible.

Through Winter Wishes, every purchase helps support the compassionate programs of Near North Palliative Care Network, including palliative support, caregiver support, companionship, and grief and bereavement services for people throughout our communities.

This year, we’re bringing back something beautifully simple: the art of slowing down, writing something by hand and sending a little kindness through the mail.

Because sometimes the smallest things can carry the biggest messages.

A postcard. A winter wish. A reminder that someone cares.
